Fish Tacos at La Famalia
La Familia Taqueria, located at Telegraph and Ashby in South Berkeley, serves some of the best Fish tacos I have found outside of San Quentin, Baja Calfornia. The unassuming Taqueria has an open, exhibition style kitchen of the taco stand dotting the highway in Baja. The menu boards sit on the floor in front of the counter, and the kitchen is laid out in it's industrial grittiness before you.
Order one to start, two is far too big a helping. The tacos come wrapped in two tortillas, layer of rice (the only variant from the Baja experience I found). shredded cabbage, onions and a thick layer of Mexican cream mixed with a few spices (probably salt and cayenne). The red snapper comes out crispy on the outside, moist on the inside and amazingly flavorful.
The red salsa that come son the side is thick, oily and full of dried peppers, pepper flakes and a little vinegar. The green salsa - probably tomatillo - is smooth with occasional bits of onion. The chips, house made, are crispy and not overly greasy.
I've been looking for good fish tacos in the Berkeley area, and these are definitely the best found to date.
