Amanda Marchand
Another artist I was introduced to by the Traywick is Amanda Marchand. The work I've seen are photographs (some mounted on brushed aluminum platens). The pictures are diptych format (some triptych), two related panels with an assigned left and right panel. The series I saw was called 415/514, with the left panels photographed in the Bay Area (area code 415) and the right panels in Quebec (area code 514). The connection, visually, is a continuous horizon line that jumps between the panels. The palette is a muted cone - of winter colors, washed out grays, whites, and other earth tones. They're very sparse, but viusally striking.
The pieces are at their best when the horizon line is suggested, and exists as a sharp line developed only from slight contrasts (see Unititled 7L and 7R) and when the panels have a huge difference in saturation and subject matter, but share underlying palettes and, of course, the horizon line (see Unititled 5L and 5R)
