St. Jorge

We received a gift basket from Cow Girl Creamery (we think it came from Cub!). All the cheeses are fantastics, but the real stand out was the St. Jorge (Portuguese-style Queijo).

The cheese is made by the Fagundes Family in Hanford, Kings County, California. They have a family of cheese that are all created in an "Old World" style from family recipes that originated in Lorale, Sao Jorge Island, Portugal.

The St. Jorge is labeled as a strong cheese, but it's strong in a nutty sense - has some hints of an aged gouda. The texture is smooth on the tongue, while the cheese itself is mottled. There is a slight "bite" on initial taste, but smoothes out over the tongue.

Apparently, it's a raw milk cheese and aged for 3 years.

It was exceedingly good with a pint of Sierra Celebration ale, and I bet it would be great with tannin-rich wines, too.
