Mercury Rev - The Secret Migration
Where All is a Dream was bombastic, layered, and open - almost sounding like it was an outdoors record, The Secret Migration is an indoors record - bombastic and almost claustrophobic
Layers and layers of instrumentation create a dense layer that reveals detail more and more with each listen. Everything sounds great on first listen, but the fun of this record is finding your way to the core of the songs. With each listen a instrument rises to the top - most notably the bass. Instead of playing off the drums, the bass takes on a world of it's own - beat, melody, patterns and texture.
All the songs are still lead by the fragile vocal of Jonathan Donahue - sounding like a person having a revelation on each song.
