Asparagus, Urine, and You
My pee stinks after I eat any quantity of asparagus. Now I know why.
My friend Kate did some reserach and foudn these choice nuggets:
"I just did a little research on the asparagus pee question and found this: "It is said that in a venerable British men's club there is a sign reading "DURING THE ASPARAGUS SEASON MEMBERS ARE REQUESTED NOT TO RELIEVE THEMSELVES IN THE HATSTAND."
A quote from Gabriel Garcia MarquezÕ Love in the Time of Cholera: one of the characters, Juvenal Urbino, 'enjoyed the immediate pleasure of smelling a secret garden in his urine that had been purified by lukewarm asparagus.'"
Does your pee stink?

The smell is supposed to be a metabolite of one of the constituents of asparagus - and I'm sure it is but they say the metabolite in question is methyl mercaptan which is said to be the smelliest substance known and is also used to make natural gas smelly. I cannot speak for anyone else of course but after eating asparagus my pee smells more like metal polish than mains gas. So I think it is something else - according to the Michigan Asparagus Advisory Board (God Bless 'em) "a few individuals ... claim that the odiferous compound is asparagine-amino-succinic-acid monoamide, which is derived from the amino acid, asparagine". I cannot say for sure. Keep eating the asparagus, anyway

i am truly relieved to know that there are others out in the world who are tormented by the same thing. the evil, "aspara-pee!" i think scientists should find a way to remove whatever it is that truly causes the stinkies.

Now that I've proven to my wife that "asperapee" is not a figment of my imagination, she wants me to research my other "odors"

I was on vacation and was telling the Innkeepers about the effect of asparagus to my urine and they thought I was nuts. Click the link to WebMD above for an explanation.

Its amazing that almost immediately after consuming this delightful veggie that is so healthy and delicious we stink! What causes it? Surely there is a nutritionalist available with the answer? this is my favorite veggie, but why the stench? what can i do to avoid it?

Funny thing is, I was so worried about it tonight that I just got done peeing into a bottle so that I could take it to my doctor. I looked on webmd.com for information on infections, and stumbled across the mention that asparagus can make the "burning rubber" smell. Well, my dinner consisted of a wonderful pasta w/asparagus earlier. Guess I can go out to the car and throw away that bottle. :

I always noticed that every so often my pee would smell metallic (?) and never could connect which food I was eating to the smell. The other night I had asparagus, and later was watching Austin Powers: Goldmember. There was a scene where he eats asparagus and urinates, and someone notices the smell. Then when I went to the bathroom, eureka! There was the smell! Now I know the truth, thanks to Mike Meyers.

Cool it everyone. It's a simple and natural biochemical reaction caused by an amino acid in the asparagus, which comes out as a nasty whiff when you wazz... It's not the end of the world. Keep eating the asparagus, dudes, it's really good for you.

So glad i'm not alone, theres a whole army with the same problem, thanks to google I found you and now am at ease. I honestly thought it's life threatening, thats how odd the smell is.
Thats one vegetable I don't have to eat anymore, I wonder though if it has any benefits of such??

Thank goodness, I thought I was dying, I mentioned the stinky pee to my doctor today thinking he would admit me immediately into hospital for a series of tests and he just said, eating too much asparagus are wee??
Problem solved, and asparagus will stay on the menu.

I don't eat asparagus yet I have this weird urine smell. It's metallic like, or chemical. Very unusual smell perhaps 2-4 times per month. Any ideas? johnboy300@bellsouth.net

Oy! I'm a PhD organic chemist and I can tell you with authority that the odor in your urine after eating asparagus in NOT due solely to methyl mercaptan (or methane thiol, exactly the same thing). Methyl mercaptan smells much worse, trust me on this one. This is not to say that there isn't some methyl mercaptan present, however, the most likely source of methyl mercaptan, being the amino acid cysteine, should produce that smell in the urine whenever it is consumed, like if you take a multivitamin or eat meat, for example, I just don't see it (or smell it).
Anyway, the reason we attribute methyl mercaptan to that smell is because somebody "suggested" that's what it is. Now, some of us seem to promulgate this story. Somewhat better research seems to indicate that the smell is caused by a few compounds characterized as thioesters, and, to me, it seems closer to the truth. Sadly, I can't find anything that nails down the exact names and structures of these metabolites. I do agree that the smell is surfury in nature, however.
This all began when my son asked me what chemical makes that smell. I regret that I cannot give him a precise enough answer.
Cheers
