Birthday Party
I threw myself a birthday party. IÕve never had one before. Really.
I was raised a JehovahÕs Witness, and they donÕt celebrate birthdays. Since I had jumped ship 12 years ago birthdays hadnÕt really held a lot of meaning for me. I had, in the past, been gung-ho for otherÕs birthdays, doing my best to make sure Jenny had a great birthday experience, etc. But IÕd never really done it for myself.
I sent out invitations a few weeks ago, and began the panning process. My friend Nancy, who is graduating this summer from cooking college, offered to make food for the event and even make me a cake.
Rita, Jenny and Teri all agreed to help in the production, and we agreed to make sushi. Jen and I did the shopping, buying some of the following:
- 3 pounds of Ahi
- 3 pounds of Salmon
- 5 ounces of Tobiko
- 2 Unagi fillets
- 2 pounds of Green Mango Salad
- Seaweed wrappers
- 20 Pounds of sushi rice
- Various vegetables
- Parrano cheese
- Mona Lisa Gouda
- Blue Cheese
- Triple Crme Brie
- Manchego
- Vermont Cabot Cheddar (3 year)
- Jalapenos stuffed with Jack, Shrimp, and wrapped with Bacon (assembled by us)
- Sake
- Various beers: Summit Extra Pale Ale, Speakeasy Prohibition Ale, LagunitaÕs IPA, Anchor Liberty Ale, Pacifico
- Vodka for Kolin Ð Kettle 1
All this and more. Rita, Jenny, Nancy and Teri began assembling the various aspects of sushi, chopping, cutting rolling, etc.

They made a ton of rolls, and lots of sashimi. It took hours and hours, but they seemed to be having fun.
Jamie brought a keg of his home brew, which went over well. Everyone gravitated to the home brew more than the bottled beers. Jenny made 30 Ginger Rogers Ð a drink assembled from Mint, Ginger Syrup, Gin and soda. Those were snapped up in minutes.
Folks ate the sushi, hung around and talked.

Nancy, the dear, made me a cake. A super delicious chocolate cake with all sorts of complicated words for the frosting. She topped it with raspberries and white chocolate, sliced it and served it. EVERYONE loved the cake.
I opned some presents, got a great stash of good stuff. Cookbooks from Nicki and Sean, a book about roadside attractions from Katie, a pool cue from Kate and Patrick, a Snap-ON Tool from Don and Alice, and a glow wire set from Kolin and Nan, a Thiebaud book (with cakes on the cover) from Rita and Anthony, and two homemade books from Teri, a catalog from the Squeek Carnwath show from Daria and Dolan, and a whole bunch of other stuff that I can remember now.
It was a great party, and I had a total blast.
