Suck.com is on Vacation
This story reminds me of what a legend that suck.com had become and still holds.
Really, the specialness was over before I arrived at the suck.com offices to start as production editor. It still had an allure in much the same way that walking around The City with a Wired messenger bag did - you the guy that was carrying it felt stupid, while folks looked on with jealousy.
Truth be told the freshness and fun was sucked out (pun intended) by may of 1996. The redesign with five channels, the increased participation of writers, the infamous article by Pop was a cresting point for the creativity and fun.
The daily publishing, with the exception of Heather Havrilesky's work, was limp. The humor and wit gone with the DIY attitude Ð a clich, I know, but true in this case. It became hipster and full of inside jokes largely brought on by a too-young editor.
That said, it WAS fun working on the project, the product was just miserably dull.
