A found painting, 1995
This written in college, as a young-in.
been a week from hell for me too.......been working on my portfolios, crazy crazy crazy to take three fine arts classes and try to work full time....just plain crazy. so i have been running around like crazy, trying to find time to sleep/eat, and frankly have been missing the mark on both of those activities......
so, the days go by, and they are moving so damn fast, and one day, i'm going to realize that i no longer have a job, and am no longer a student......this scares me.....
i went on a blind date on friday night, date from hell. i was set up by my friend mina, in nyc, she teaches at hofstra university on long island.....well she said she had this great friend named darcy that i needed to meet....so i went to meet her at jitters, this really neat place on nicollet mall, and she had brought twenty-five of her closest friends to scrutinize me....geez.....well needless to say this put me on edge......so i was fielding all these strangers questions, ten minutes later i look up and she's gone......so i go home.....not at all disappointed.........and there are two messages on my machine, both from darcy, one saying 'you are a bastard, you ignored me, you hurt my feelings'......and the other, 'i'm sorry, can i take you to dinner tomorrow night...?" well i agreed to the second and she dissed me, and didn't show up........hmmm, she wasn't my type at all, and there was no possibility for even enjoying time spent with her, so no love lost, and i ate the best caesar salad i have ever had....
hmmm thinking of things in terms of food.
well, i had a neat experience happen this week....there is a crazy guy that lives in the city, near me....and he has befriended the professor of art history that lives across the hall from me......well he is crazy, and not just a bit crazy....the other night he showed up at the apartments at about two thirty and knocked on marion's door....marion answered, and david (the crazy guy) said that he was in really bad shape.....he said that he knew that he was a saint, and that he was going to rule the world with jesus in heaven, but there was a problem....he had called god into his house, but the devils moved in quicker......so now his house is full of devils, and god won't come in......so, he came to the apartments to see if marion would allow him to stay in the hallway, away from the devils....marion said that it wouldn't be the best idea, and that if he was truly a saint, he could go home and order the devils out, or at least reason with them..... well he liked this idea and went on his way.....about twenty minutes later, he came back and said that he had talked to them, but they wouldn't leave, because of a painting that hung in his apartment, it was a painting that he had done a few years previous........marion told him to go home and cast the painting out of his house, and into the street......so david left......and i dressed quickly and followed him home....sure enough he tossed the painting right out of the front door, and into the street....so i ran out and grabbed it and brought it home.....it's called lenin and garbo......and i have an issue of the dinkytown times, a single page zine that this david guy produces.......and there was the painting on the front side, and a story that describes the origins......very good painting....this guy was an mfa in the seventies, and i find this interesting that he is such a brilliant painter....that he is so crazy.....and now i own one of his paintings....my art collection grows day by day.
[Updated 1/18/2008 the artists work can be seen here. He recently passed away.]
and classes are still rapidly approaching an end....i wanna go to chicago for a few days over break...see some art, spend a few relaxed days.....i dunno.
and i have so many projects that i need to work on....

David James Salisbury had many lucid years since 2001, but died this Friday, January 11, 2008. His visitation is Wednesday, Jan. 16, Johnson Peterson Funeral Home, 612 S. Smith Avenue 4-6 p.m. The service is at Saint Mary's Basilica (chapel), Thursday 1:30 p.m. The visitation will also have present about 15-20 paintings. He will be greatly missed by his wife and friends. Incidentally, he once mentioned the Lenin and Garbo painting - said he regretted it was gone. It would be good to photograph it for his website at mnartists.org. Marion was a great friend to David and bought a number of his works. He predeceased David some years ago, but left instructions to return them to David. Some beautiful labors were preserved.
