Midwestern Fall
Jenny and I traveled to Racine Wisconsin for her Grandfather's 80th birthday. It was a great time to go back, the leaves were in their seasonal change, maples, oaks and sumac in their peak.
We brought back a large amount of fresh fish and on Friday we went to task on creating a sushi feast. We made spicy tuna rolls, unagi, salmon and tuna sashimi. The presentation was a bit off - the rice came out a bit sticky - but it tasted fresh and was some of the best sushi I've had.
On Saturday we ate fresh Crab, imported overnight courtesy of Jenny's aunt and uncle from Hayward. It was a Midwestern Crab Feed, something that rarely happens outside of Red Lobster.
On Sunday we traveled to Chicago for a visit to the Art Institute. A show of Van Gogh and Gauguin was featured, and I breezed through it, not thoroughly enjoying it die to the crowds and heat in the gallery. But the institute had much to offer me. I got to see a large collection of Cornell Boxes, some of my favorites. They also had a large collection of the Avant-Garde, including Miro, Du Champ, and Ernst.
On Monday, we spent the day with Jenny's other Grandfather, capping the day off with a tasty round of cracker-crust pizza, a midwestern specialty.
Our travel on the airlines was uneventful, as I imagined it would be. The sole exception is that we flew Midwest Express, and I was searched before I board the plane. The agents at the gate selected a few people at random, and I was one of them. This really isn't noteworthy, except in retrospect I realized as I was unpacking, that I had carried my Leatherman Multitool onboard with me. Contained on the Multitool was a 3-inch knife and a pair of scissors. They went undiscovered until I was packing for the return trip, and I safely packed it in my checked baggage.
Since I've been home, I've done the following:
- Built and installed my new server racks in the basement.
- Had lunch with Carl.
- Re-hung a door in my guest bedroom.
- Set-up a drip irrigation system in the back yard.
- Finished up a contract; bid on two more.
- Listened to all my Flaming Lips albums, in order.
