The New Year
In the next few days I'll be attending a number of rock and roll shows, and this current stint started last week with the arrival of The New Year in San Francisco. TNY is made up of Matt and Bubba Kadane of Bedhead fame, and they make similar music with a few variations. The main variation is the addition of a driving bass line. They hinted at this direction on BeHeaded, and now have fully realized it.
The music is quite similar to Bedhead -- intricate, intertwined guitar lines. Monotone vocals. Slow builds and big releases. It's all good.
The show was great - they pulled most of their set form Newness Ends their only full length, and finished the set with The Rest of the Day, one of my personal favorites from Bedhead's catalog.
Opening bands were two solo sets, the first by Josh McKay, former front guy of Macha. He came out and played some eastern-influenced acoustic guitar stuff, set his guitar down and began a set of songs sung to a back-up tape. And it was good. It really was.
The next set was performed by David Bazan of Pedro the Lion. I was impressed by his stage presence, and intensity of performance. His lyrics really shine as a solo performer. He played a nice version of Radiohead's No Surprises.
Next week: Plaid, ...And they will know us by the trail of dead, Fridge, Tarentel and more.
